Acoustic intervention on historic windows
In the context of a project within a historic building used as a theater, the client expressed the need to significantly reduce external noise emissions, protecting the interior during musical events, particularly classical concerts, which are characterized by intense and prolonged sound dynamics. A key constraint of the project was the complete preservation of the original fixtures, both for their architectural and historical value and for the impact that any replacement would have on the aesthetic balance of the space.
The solution developed by ISAM involved the creation and installation of a second internal window, completely independent, capable of ensuring high noise reduction without interfering with the existing window.
The dimensions of the openings were particularly challenging: each window measures approximately 3 meters in width and 6 meters in height, decidedly non-standard measurements, which required a customized structural design and meticulous management of each phase, from production to installation.
To make this application possible, a steel load-bearing structure was designed, anchored to the internal masonry, capable of supporting the weight of the new window and ensuring its stability over time. The new window was made entirely of wood, with a special profile with an overall thickness of 92 mm, designed to offer high acoustic performance without compromising the aesthetics of the interior.
Great attention was paid to the choice of materials and construction technology:
the double glazing installed guarantees certified noise reduction of up to 49 dB,
the high-density gaskets ensure maximum air tightness,
the joints were sealed with specific insulating expanding tapes and high-density, specific-weight mastics, essential for containing lateral sound transmissions.
From an aesthetic point of view, the new window was crafted with artisanal care to dialogue harmoniously with the existing fixtures, both in terms of geometry and surface finish. Each element was custom-designed, taking into account the irregularities of the historic masonry and the limited accessibility of the site.
The result achieved combines technical rigor, respect for the architectural heritage and attention to detail. The intervention integrates perfectly into the environment, leaving the character of the theater unchanged, and at the same time significantly improves its internal and external acoustic performance, offering greater comfort to users and better management of the relationship between public space and urban context.
